West Tennessee School for the Deaf (WTSD), located in Jackson, TN, is a state school that offers a comprehensive education to meet the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students Preschool (ages 3-5) - 6th grade. At WTSD, we strive to provide a language rich environment using both sign language and English, and educational experiences that develop skills and knowledge that our students need to be successful members in their communities. The field of education is constantly evolving, and we strive to adapt and equip our faculty with the necessary resources they need to provide students with the skills they need.

In addition to providing preschool through sixth grade educational experiences, WTSD also offers specialist in deaf education, audiology, and speech and language. Our school also focuses on positive behavior. Our students make a promise each morning to be RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, and COOPERATIVE by meeting positive behavioral expectations in all areas of the school. As a result, our school has a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm, and students are rewarded as these behaviors are observed.

Our school is served by dedicated men and women who are committed to providing all our children with an exceptional education in a safe, secure, and healthy environment.

Congratulations to WTSD for being selected as a Model of Demonstration (MOD) School—Bronze Level for Response to Instruction and Intervention for Behavior (RTI2-B)! This recognition is based on the school’s partnership with the Tennessee Behavior Supports Project during the 2020-2021 school year. MOD Schools, like WTSD, are implementing RTI2-B with high fidelity and have applied this framework to improve their school climate and culture, student engagement, and school connectedness.

Thank you to Veronica MacDonald and the RTI2-B committee for your dedication and commitment to supporting positive behaviors and engagement with all students, staff, and families.
