West Tennessee School for the Deaf is staffed with a wonderful Student Services Department. This department consists of one full-time and two part-time certified speech pathologists, two full-time audiologists, deaf educators, and school counselors to deliver our ongoing consultative services. Topics of expertise include the following:
*Content Area Instruction for Children with Hearing Loss
*First Steps in Aural Rehabilitation for Students with Cochlear Implants
*Classroom Strategies for Students with Hearing Loss
*Managing Auditory Needs of Students with Hearing Loss
*A Team Approach to Managing Students with Hearing Loss
*Modifying Curriculum Content for Students with Hearing Loss
*Managing Language Needs of Students with Mild to Moderate Hearing Loss
*Assisting Therapists and Teachers in Developing Phonemic Awareness and Speech Intelligibility of Hearing Impaired Students
We house a free hearing clinic for children from birth to 21 years of age. No referral is needed to schedule an hearing evaluation. Simply call (731) 423-5705 to make an appointment. Routine evaluation services include hearing tests, speech discrimination testing, typanometry and otoacoustic emissions testing. We are happy to make hearing aid recommendations and can fit the hearing aids on a child. We do not sell hearing aids. We make classroom amplification recommendations and set this amplification specifically for the hearing impaired child who will use it.
We also conduct an instructional program for family members of newly identified hearing-impaired children. This program is called NewSounds and emphasizes understanding hearing loss, the impact of hearing loss on the family and learning about hearing aids and their function. For more information about this center based program call (731) 423-5705.
The WTSD team assists parents, local schools and other service providers in making educational placement decisions and accomodation recommendations for hearing impaired infants and children. We welcome invitations to IEP meetings and IFSP meetings.
